March 4th Week Part B

March 27 - Kites and Wind

To spark interest in in our topic for the day we watched a video "Five Little Kites" . We repeated the verse as we used our own little foam kites. Each student wanted a turn to play with the kites; so, we ended up repeating the little verse several times.

Our goal for today was to make two different kinds of kites, fly them, and determine which type of kite is best. The criteria we will be using to determine which kite design is best are: Which kite was easier to get into the air? Which kite maintained good altitude? Which kite looked coolest?  To give each student individual attention to make the kites, we had two math stations to work on. One student worked with me in making our two kites, the other two students worked individual on math station.

The first station was using Discovery Toys Playful Patterns to create different shapes.

The second math station was counting the Truffula Trees on the cards and then clip a clothes pinon the correct number. The students were to then have the other student double check their work. It was really cute to listen to them tell each other that they had done a good job and sometimes they even gave each other a high five. Each student had the opportunity to do every activity.

For snack we used graham cracker squares, peanut butter, string cheese to make an edible kite.

To make the kites more colorful, we added different colored sprinkles. We also had a Clementine, yogurt, and apple juice.

After snack we took to the back yard to test our kites. Our first kite was a paper kite we made from colorful scrap booking paper. The paper was a little heavier than regular paper and it took a bit of effort to get the kite flying. The kite design was good as it caught the breeze the students created as they ran full speed.

The second kite was made with a plastic bag from newspaper. This kite was easy to to get up in the air because of the light weight plastic and the fact that air got caught in the bag. The students enjoyed their bag/kite best because it was easier to get the kite to do tricks (movement up and down). We spent a lot of time outside running around and flying our kites.

Curious George Flies a Kite

To end the day we snuggled down in the bean bag chairs and listened to "Curious George Flies a Kite" by H. A. Rey.

For homework the students took home a Book Buddy Bag and were asked to have the family help them fly their kites.
